Low coffee and side tables are an integral part of a trendy living room, bedroom, and terrace. Small tables of different heights and diameters form free compositions and can replace one large item in the center of the front area. What copies should be taken as reference points?
Eileen Gray, Classicon
Adjustable Small Tables E 1027, designed by Eileen Gray, is perhaps the most archetypal item in 20th-century modernist classics. Precisely adjusted proportions, a special design, and the ability to change the height and carry the table like a bag – by the handle-ledge, made it popular. The name of the table – Adjustable Table – E 1027 – repeats the name of the famous summer villa of Eileen Gray and Jean Badovici. Now the model is produced by Classicon.
Franco Albini, Cassina
Called Cicognino, or “little stork”, these small tables from Cassina are distinguished by their clean lines and witty appearance. Designer Franco Albini has reduced the design to the bare essentials: three thin legs, a 40 cm diameter tabletop, and a wooden edge that looks like a tray. One of the three legs extends higher than the others and ends in a handle that can be used to move the table.
Paola Navone, Baxter
Baxter’s Matera coffee table, designed by Paola Navone, has a sculptural shape and original coloring. The square top with rounded corners is supported by a massive column leg, and the terrazzo effect is provided by the Palladiana composite material, which consists of 94-96% marble and 4-6% resin. This composition makes the table particularly durable and suitable for outdoor use.
Konstantin Grcic , Classicon
Konstantin Grcic notched and bent a steel sheet to create the Diana A, which can be used as a side table, coffee table, or laptop stand. A universal object is open to a wide range of interpretations and applications, and most importantly – to the imagination. Just as words are made up of letters, Classicon ‘s Diana tables combine with other furniture and objects to form their own alphabet.
Alvar Aalto, Fiam
Fiam’s three-legged Omaggio round table is a glass interpretation of the world’s most famous stool Stool 60, designed by Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto. The same iconic form – and a completely different material. Transparent tables are offered to be used individually or in a group. The task of the brand is to show that glass can be not only an additional accessory or a small accent but a full-fledged element of the interior.
Jean -Marie Massot, Glas Italia
See-through small tables with a bright blue contrasting insert were designed for Glas Italia by Jean-Marie Massot. The name Don Gerrit refers to the name of Gerrit Rietveld – a Dutch designer, architect, furniture maker, modernist, and inventor – and the aesthetics of his work. Transparent glass makes the table visually light and “invisible”, but due to its interesting shape, the model can become an unusual accent in the interior.
Linea and Rasmus Hildebrand, Friends & Founders
Ida Linea and Rasmus Hildebrand designed these spectacular small tables for their Friends & Founders brand. The design is based on a geometric shape and a well-balanced balance between a sculptural base in the shape of a ball and a thin tabletop and leg. The model is made of marble and metal.
The Shape
The laconic model Rhette from the Spanish brand La Forma can play the role of both small tables and stools. It is made of durable weather-resistant poly cement and can be used indoors and outdoors. The removable lid adds extra functionality to the table – there is storage space inside.
GamFratesi, Hay
Designed for the Hay brand by the duo GamFratesi, the Tulou table was inspired by traditional tray design. The essential difference is the larger size and the four-legged tubular steel base. The minimalistic design allows you to fit the table into different interiors, and the removable top can be used separately.
Prospero Razulo, Zanotta
Designed for Zanotta by Prospero Razulo, these small tables are shaped like an hourglass, giving it its name, Time. Its design consists of two polyurethane cones, the ends of which are connected by a steel rod. Thanks to its clean lines and polished surface, the table is ready to complement any furniture.
Rudolfo Dordoni, Minotti
The Cesar sculptural model designed by Rodolfo Dordoni for Minotti can serve as a table or a stool – in any case, it will become a spectacular decorative element of the interior. In addition to the version for indoor use, it is also available in an outdoor version.
Joseph Hoffmann, Wittmann
Satztische is not just one table, but four at once. They can be used all at once or hidden under the other if necessary. Josef Hoffmann designed this simple and functional wooden model for Wittmann at the turn of the century.
D Jasper Morrison, Vitra
The Cork series, designed by Jasper Morrison, was released by Vitra in 2004. These stool objects, whose modest shape resembles thread spools, have found their way into the collections of design museums. Morrison made the most of the natural properties of cork: the strength of the object is combined with a pleasant velvety surface. For all their lightness, the models are very stable – they can serve as a stool or side table.
Eero Saarinen, Knoll
From the late 1940s to the 1950s, Eero Saarinen designed many of Knoll’s most recognizable pieces, including the Tulip chairs and Pedestal tables. The table from the Saarinen collection is a miniature version of this dining table. Its main feature is the support smoothly expanding upwards and downwards. “The bottom of typical tables and chairs creates an overly confusing, unsettled world,” said Saarinen.
Ettore Sottsass , Kartell
The Colonna by Kartell is part of the Kartell Goes Sottsass – A Tribute to Memphis collection released in 2015. It pays tribute to the Italian architect Ettore Sottsass and the Memphis group, of which he was an ideologue. Ironic and versatile, the plastic Colonna can be used as a stool or side table.
Daniel Enoxson, Hay
The Terrazzo table, designed for Hay by Swedish designer Daniel Enoxson, is an interpretation of a typical piece of outdoor furniture. The name of the model comes from the terrazzo base, which contrasts with the laconic snow-white top and thin leg. The table can be used both at home and in public spaces.
