Milanese architects, designers and stylists Arianna Lelli Mami and Chiara Di Pinto, Studiopepe , are the authors of the Five to Nine couch for Tacchini, composed of 12 soft cylinders. By analogy with Joe Colombo’s outstanding Tube transformable chair, one element (cylinder) plays the role of a universal module, the addition or subtraction of which changes the parameters of the item.
“It all started with the pillows: we loved things from the 1970s and wanted to rethink and replicate them in a subtle way, bringing the project up to date,” say the designers. Five to Nine is very simple and cinematic. It refers to the aesthetics of modernism, Bauhaus and personifies the attitude towards the room as a workshop. The elegant walnut wooden base is covered with eleven soft cylinders. Another one is optional; it can be transformed into an armrest or backrest. Applying Japanese lifestyle philosophy to the new needs of the modern home, the mattress is a removable accessory
The piece of furniture is designed to be universal and multifunctional: it can be a seat for relaxing or waiting; it can be used separately or in complex compositions (with an armrest that can act as a separator); and finally, it can adapt to both domestic and public interiors. The name inverts the metaphor of the workday: Studiopepe furniture is called “Five to Nine” instead of “Nine to Five” and refers to the part of the remaining time when we can relax and take care of ourselves.
